You're absolutely right. I had the same issue. Just open the .ass file in notepad and go to line 25. You should see this text:
Style: Default,Arial,18,&H00FFFFFF,&H0000FFFF,&H00000000,&H00000000,1,0,0,0,100,100,0,0,1,2,3,2,20,20,20,1

Just change the default font size from 18 to a higher number that is suitable for you and save the file. I changed it to 40 for myself. My edit looks like this:
Style: Default,Arial,40,&H00FFFFFF,&H0000FFFF,&H00000000,&H00000000,1,0,0,0,100,100,0,0,1,2,3,2,20,20,20,1
